Round Trip or Two One-Way Tickets? We Compared Fares on 13 Routes

Is a round-trip ticket always cheaper than booking two one-ways? We compared both on 13 routes and found gaps of up to 42%. Here's when each option saves you money, and what to check before you book.

When you search for a flight, you probably pick "round trip" without a second thought. But what if you booked a one-way ticket out and another one back? Would you pay more, or find a better deal?

We compared both options on 13 routes between cities in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, North America and Asia. The results aren't what most people expect.

What the numbers say

For each route, the table compares the cheapest round trip for a November 2026 trip with the cheapest pair of one-way tickets for a trip of the same length:

Route Round trip Two one-ways Cheaper option
Cairo → Dubai $179 $308 Round trip, by 42%
Paris → New York $459 $611 Round trip, by 25%
New York → London $480 $589 Round trip, by 19%
Algiers → Istanbul $126 $144 Round trip, by 13%
Cairo → Istanbul $177 $191 Round trip, by 7%
Dubai → Mumbai $294 $307 Round trip, by 4%
Jeddah → Cairo $204 $208 About the same
Istanbul → London $137 $140 About the same
Paris → Algiers $127 $124 About the same
Kuwait City → Cairo $144 $138 One-ways, by 4%
London → Dubai $384 $362 One-ways, by 6%
London → Barcelona $47 $43 One-ways, by 9%
Casablanca → Paris $175 $149 One-ways, by 15%

How we got these numbers. They are the lowest fares in the TravelFlow price calendar for trips starting in November 2026 and lasting 7 to 14 days, as recorded on November 1, 2026. For "two one-ways", we added up the cheapest outbound and return fares on dates the same number of days apart, so each pair is a trip you could actually take. We counted differences of 3% or less as about the same. These prices come from recent searches by other travelers, so treat them as a guide to price levels, not guaranteed fares.

What do these numbers tell us?

  • Picking the wrong option can cost you: from Cairo to Dubai, two one-ways cost $129 more than a round trip. From Casablanca to Paris, they saved $26.
  • It comes down to how airlines price tickets: some airlines set one-way fares close to the round-trip price. On Cairo to Dubai, one-way fares in November started at $164, more than 90% of the round-trip price. Low-cost airlines, on the other hand, usually price each flight on its own, so two one-ways tend to cost about the same as a round trip, sometimes less.
  • The answer changes from month to month: on Istanbul to London, both options cost about the same in November, but in December two one-ways were about 17% cheaper ($118 against $142). On Cairo to Dubai, the round trip's advantage shrank from 42% in November to 22% in December.
  • Prices can depend on the direction: in November, one-way fares from New York to Paris started at $215, while the same trip the other way started at $388. Check each direction separately rather than assuming both cost the same.
  • Compare like with like: the cheapest one-way pair between Casablanca and Paris had a stop in each direction, while the outbound flight in the cheapest round trip was nonstop. The saving was real, but it could cost you a few extra hours.

Compare for yourself: round trip or one way

These two calendars show the same route, Paris to New York. The first shows the cheapest round-trip fares and the second one-way fares. If a one-way fare is close to the round-trip price, the round trip is the clear winner. You can change the cities in each calendar from its settings icon, for example to check the return leg on its own:

When two one-way tickets make sense

  • When they really are cheaper in total, after comparing the same dates and the same number of stops.
  • When you want to fly out with one airline and back with another, picking the cheapest or most convenient option each way.
  • When you fly into one city and out of another, say into Rome and home from Milan. You can also search this as a single multi-city booking, so compare both.
  • When you don't know your return date yet. Just bear in mind that return fares can rise by the time you buy, and some countries ask for a return ticket on arrival.

When a round trip is the better choice

  • When it's cheaper, which happens a lot on some routes, as the table shows.
  • When you want one booking and one set of rules: one baggage policy, and one company to deal with if your plans change.
  • When your destination asks for proof of onward travel and you don't want to put off booking the return.

Key differences between the two

Price isn't the only difference. Here's what else to consider before you decide:

Round-trip ticket Two one-way tickets
If you miss the outbound flight Your return may be canceled too Your return ticket stays valid
If one flight is rescheduled You deal with one company Each ticket is separate, and the other airline doesn't have to rebook you
Baggage Usually one policy May differ between airlines, so you may pay bag fees twice
Changes and cancellations Fees on one booking Fees on each ticket

Before you book

  1. Search twice: once for a round trip, and once for a one-way ticket in each direction.
  2. Compare like with like: the same dates, the same number of stops and a similar journey time.
  3. Add up baggage fees for each ticket if you're flying with two different airlines.
  4. Read the change and cancellation rules for each ticket.
  5. Check your destination's entry rules if you haven't booked your return yet.

Frequently asked questions

Is a round-trip ticket always cheaper than two one-way tickets?

No. For trips in November 2026, the round trip was cheaper on 6 of the 13 routes we compared, the two options cost about the same on 3, and two one-way tickets were cheaper on 4.

Why does a one-way ticket sometimes cost almost as much as a round trip?

Some airlines price one-way fares high compared with round trips. On Cairo to Dubai, for example, one-way fares in November started at $164, while round trips started at $179.

Can I fly out with one airline and back with another?

Yes, by booking two separate one-way tickets. Each ticket comes with its own rules and baggage allowance, and if one flight is rescheduled, the other airline has no obligation to change your booking.

What happens if I miss the outbound flight on a round-trip ticket?

Many airlines cancel the rest of the booking, including your return flight, if you don't show up for the first flight. If you can't take the outbound flight, contact the airline before it departs.

Do I need a return ticket to enter some countries?

Some countries ask visitors for proof that they will leave, and airlines may check this at check-in. If you book two one-way tickets, buy the return before you travel and check your destination's entry rules.
